"This collection is sure to win over even die-hard anti-romanticists," wrote the British music magazine Gramophone in 2018 about Renaud Capuçon's celebrated film music album Cinema. Now the famous violinist and cineaste has followed up and released a second installment: Les Choses de la Vie - Cinema II.
With this album, Renaud Capuçon once again indulges his passion for film music. He chose melodies from legendary films such as Die Spaziergängerin von Sans-Souci with Romy Schneider and Michel Piccoli, The English Patient and The Shape of Water, winner of four Oscars, two Golden Globe Awards and the 2017 Golden Lion. Some of the film scores contain references to well-known classical works. For example, Jean-Claude Petit quoted a leitmotif from Verdi's opera La Forza del Destino in Jean Florette. The composer added the theme, slightly jazzed up, to the harmonica-playing title character of the film.
Renaud Capuçon worked with the composer Cyrille Lehn, who arranged most of the music for violin and orchestra, to transfer the works to his violin. The French symphony orchestra Les Siècles stands for creative approaches to bringing the music of past centuries into the present. Under the direction of Duncan Ward, the award-winning ensemble accompanies the violinist on his journey through film history.
